Digital Health Category: Meet the EIT Health Catapult 2021 regional finalists: Cliniserve, Mentalis, VAY and Ebenbuild

Twelve finalists were chosen for this year’s D.A.CH. Regional Selection of the EIT Health Catapult. Here are the shortlisted candidates from the Digital Health Category: Cliniserve, Mentalis, Vay and Ebenbuild

On 11 May 2021, we are hosting the D.A.CH. Regional Selection of EIT Health Catapult and this year the exciting pitch competition will include 12 promising startups from Europe. Meet the four Digital Health teams and learn more about their projects:

Cliniserve

Product/service idea in 50 words or less:
Cliniserve offers a scalable software solution to the nursing crisis, increasing the time nurses spent with patients from 15% to 50%. By combining task management with staff disposition, we offer a SaaS product with immediate benefits to hospitals.

Origins of the idea:
The founders did internships in nursing institutions and realized that nurses take over too many tasks that they weren’t meant to do – together with the sheer scope of the nursing crisis, this motivated the team to develop Cliniserve together with nurses.

Key differentiated product features:
We are the only mobile assistant for nurses currently in productive use in stationary care, we focus on task-based communication. By adding staff disposition, we can now offer an end-to-end solution to our customers, that enables them to address the nursing shortage with an executable offer.

Reasons for applying to EIT Health Catapult:
We want to make care institutions and the general public aware of the huge strain on nurses. We believe that EIT Health Catapult can offer this exposure, as well as helping us win new investors and corporate partners.

Future plans & ambitions. What’s next?
With the current digitalisation support for German hospitals (KHZG), we are looking to strengthen our local position. At the same time, partners like BEWATEC allow us to explore neighbouring EU markets over the next year, facilitating our own expansion activities from 2022 onwards. We are currently closing our seed round to grow our team for the upcoming opportunities.

Mentalis

Product/service idea in 50 words or less:
The mentalis platform offers an app-based solution for patients with mental disorders. Patients receive access to an app and individual coaching via tele-health. The goal of the mentalis apps is to stabilize and further improve the mental health of the patient.

Origins of the idea:
Mentalis is an University spin-off. The idea comes from extensive research on smartphone apps to improve mental health.

Key differentiated product features:
Mentalis offers a low-threshold programme for patients in terms of technology (UX optimized apps, gamification) & process (enrollment through the hospital discharge management). By means of an algorithm, an individualized – tailored to the patient – therapy plan is created. Furthermore, the mentalis programmes are evidence-based.

Reasons for applying to EIT Health Catapult:
EIT Health Catapult is the logical next step to broaden our international network and visibility – as we have done already in Germany by other events (e.g. Jury nominee for “Digitaler Gesundheitspreis 2021”) .

Future plans & ambitions. What’s next?
Mentalis aims to become the leading provider of digital aftercare in Germany and a leading provider in Europe and therefore significantly improve the lives of many people suffering from mental disorders.

Ebenbuild

Product/service idea in 50 words or less:
We combine a CT scan with in-depth physiological knowledge and physics-based simulation algorithms to create a highly accurate digital twin of the patient’s lungs, enabling physicians with this precision tool to provide personalized protective ventilation therapy for ARDS thereby improving the patient’s odds of survival and recovery.

Origins of the idea:
The foundations of Ebenbuild’s technology were laid at a world-class research lab at the Technical University Munich, with research going back more than 15 years. During collaborations with leading ICU physicians, the tremendous medical need and potential benefit of our approach became clear early on. Once the capabilities of the technology were shown in a clinical setting, we founded Ebenbuild to bring this game-changing technology to market.

Key differentiated product features:
By computing regional distributions of mechanical quantities like stresses and strains, we are effectively offering a novel, computational imaging technique, which makes ventilation therapy quantifiable for the first time. On top of this, we build a comprehensive decision support layer. No comparable technology exists. The scalable software solution can be deployed worldwide regardless of ventilator brand or make and offers benefits for all relevant healthcare stakeholders.

Reasons for applying to EIT Health Catapult:
We are ambitious, we like a challenge, and we want to learn fast. In addition, we hope that the EIT Health Catapult will provide us with the opportunity to broaden our network of European digital health experts as well investors that help us to bring our vision to life.

Future plans & ambitions. What’s next?
We are currently raising a seed round to bring our digital lung twin technology to market. The money will be used to obtain approval as a medical device within the EU and to launch the product with our network of key opinion leaders. In parallel, steps towards further internationalization are taken for subsequent market entry in the US and Asia.

VAY

Product/service idea in 50 words or less:
VAY’s solution allows health and fitness companies to integrate professional human motion analysis into their web or device-based applications to track, understand and analyse their patient’s movements in real-time using just a regular camera from a phone, tablet, or laptop device.

Origins of the idea:
VAY AG is an ETH-Spin-Off that was incorporated in June 2019 with the goal of creating a fully virtual personal coach. The VAY Fitness Coach launched on the App and Play Store in June 2019 as the first end-consumer product using monocular human motion analysis and brought a lot of attention. Simultaneously, other companies from the health and fitness sector approached us and asked whether we could provide them with our technology. As we completed our first two pilots in fall 2019, we realised that this technology deserves our full attention and has the potential to revolutionize the health and fitness markets in a B2B model.

Key differentiated product features:
Our AI technology for human pose estimation (HPE) is amongst the most precise worldwide. It’s unique in that it can provide professional-grade motion analysis in a hardware-agnostic manner, meaning that it works with any RGB camera, no matter what operating system. Thereby eliminating the need for intrusive sensors or markers. Our movement expertise provides the analysis, based on the extensive exercise library we have built up, to provide real-time feedback on whether movements are performed with proper form and if not providing corrective feedback. We also have the capability of adding up to 20 new exercises per week, tailored to a client’s specific needs. All in all, being unintrusive and highly scalable, our solution is much more cost-effective to operate for our customers.

Reasons for applying to EIT Health Catapult:
We have the passion and the technology to enable a higher quality of feedback between our clients and their users /patients and in -turn to enhance people’s physical well-being. What we lack are the platform and connections to further develop our health solution. We joined the EIT Health Catapult to not only help connect us with the leading health experts and enable us to develop valuable relationships with key stakeholders and industry leaders, but also to guide us through the myriad of regulatory requirements. The mentorship of the industry veterans will situate us to provide the highest quality support and technology to our clients.

Future plans & ambitions. What’s next?
We are strongly growing our partner base within the health industry and will continue to expand our market reach. Because the health industry is more complicated and has stricter regulations, our primary focus has been mainly on Switzerland & the US, having started the market expansion with strong collaborations with local players in the fields of health and research. Ultimately, however, it is our goal to democratize professional human motion analysis and have our technology become a major building block to enable new digital approaches that promote physical activity, increase performance, predict risks for injuries and disorders, and provide granular feedback for more effective and faster treatments.

Good luck to the teams!
