TeleStar´s AR-based 3D-Live Stream of surgery drives medical training forward

EIT Health supported education project TeleSTAR brings microsurgical training to a new level | Article in Tagesspiegel Background Gesundheit & E-Health on the benefits of virtual surgical training (November 2020)

Optical aids have allowed for complicated surgery operations for more than 60 years in history. In today’s surgical training, the transmission of surgeries, and visualization of surgical information for physicians and students is limited in terms of collaboration and perceived experience. In order to address this, the TeleSTAR project – supported by EIT Health – was born: a team of experts of Fraunhofer HHI, TU Delft, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin,  and Munich Surgical Imaging have worked closely together for over 3 years to solve the problem with the help of Augmented Reality (AR). In September and November 2020, TeleSTAR successfully transmitted the surgery of cochlear implantation using an augmented reality-based 3D live stream from ENT clinics of Berlin’s renowned hospital university Charité. Tagesspiegel Background talked with Jean-Claude Rosenthal and Eric Wisotzky (scientific employees at Fraunhofer HHI, “Vision & Imaging department”) on the advantages of this virtual training method.
