Speed dating with a difference – startups and health insurance companies are working on new approaches to digital healthcare

  • Joint development of health solutions is the goal
  • focus is on the immediate benefit for the patient

Mannheim/Heidelberg, 16.10.2019. EIT Health Germany, EIT Digital and 5-HT Digital Hub for Chemistry & Health will open their doors for a special kind of meeting next Tuesday, 22 October in Heidelberg: At the “Insuring Digital Health” Healthcare Startups will bring together well-known representatives of statutory health insurance funds (SHI) at the three initiatives to jointly develop patient-oriented solutions for tomorrow’s digital healthcare.

While digital change has long since found its way into medical practices and hospitals, companies are still faced with the task of bringing their own digital innovations into line with the needs of patients and the requirements of the health care system. On the one hand, there are processes in the field of diagnostics and therapeutics that can increase efficiency through product innovations and thus offer potential savings for the solidarity system. At the same time, there is the challenge of developing products that make it easier for patients to deal with their data and the disease in question and at the same time offer medical professionals direct benefits in terms of quality assurance and efficiency.

“In every pioneering project, however exciting, the question must always be asked to what extent the patients, as the most important protagonists, can benefit from this at this point and where the holistic benefit for the health care system lies. Market entry is absolutely not realistic without the factors of usability and affordability. We have developed the event format with the aim of enabling the invited scale-ups to have a direct exchange with health insurance companies such as the AOK or the TK and thus to advance the development of targeted product innovations that will serve the needs of all participants.

Dr. Michael Lüttgen, Liaison Manager at EIT Health Germany

“Demographic developments, structural and personnel shortages and medical-technical progress require the use of innovative solutions for a sustainable health care system. Cooperation, especially with health insurance companies at the digital interface between man and technology, offers great potential for bringing medical expert knowledge to where it is needed in real time and across the board. The event format we have chosen will make it possible to make scientific findings about such innovations accessible to a wide range of users”.

Dr. Wolfgang Kniejski, Access-to-Market Lead at EIT Digital

“To advance digital innovations in the German healthcare system does not only mean to strengthen Germany as a business location, but also to unleash potentials – potentials to increase efficiency and savings on the part of the healthcare system and to improve performance for patients. Through our joint program, we bring together relevant market players from health insurance companies and start-ups to find and promote innovative solutions for the benefit of patients.”

Stefan Kohl, CEO 5-HT Digital Hub

The event will begin at noon with a lecture by Nicklas Linz, CEO of ki elements, a spin-off of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). All participants are looking forward to an exciting afternoon with a fruitful outcome.
