Introduction to Living Brain, Ilvi, Mentalab and MenuTech – finalists of the second round of Headstart Awards

Living Brain, Ilvi, Mentalab and MenuTech are the next four finalists of the EIT Health Germany Headstart Awards. Let’s find out more about them.

  • Product/service idea in 50 words or less.
    Living Brain digitizes cognitive rehabilitation with virtual reality, psychological learning paradigms and gamification. The training software can be used by the more than 4 million patients of neurological diseases in Germany to retrain cognitive abilities like action planning or attention and is connected with monitoring software for physicians and therapists.
  • Origins of the idea.
    In 2015, co-founder Julian had to undergo neurosurgery due to intractable temporal lobe epilepsy. At the forefront his physicians told him about the risk of cognitive decline and were not able to give him a proper solution in case of complications. By now he is seizure-free due to the surgery and luckily suffers no side-effects. With the knowledge from their studies of psychology and the personal experience, he and Barbara decided to change the current cognitive rehabilitation trainings and developed Living Brain for giving the millions of other patients better perspectives and chances to return to life.
  • Key differentiator features of product/services.
    Current cognitive rehabilitation is conducted with pencil/paper, desktop or smartphone applications. All of these approaches are lacking in relation to everyday life and don’t fulfill the needs of a complex cognitive rehabilitation, as science has proven. The use of a training software in VR can close this gap, the interaction with real-life scenarios like a kitchen or a garden while being in hospital is offering multiple benefits. Mobile VR devices bring care to wherever it is needed, monitoring software for physicians and therapists allows to monitor the treatment not only while being hospitalized but also when the patient is training at home. Furthermore, Living Brain integrates psychological strategies into the software to consolidate the training effects and deliver functional cognitive rehabilitation.
  • Reasons for applying to Headstart.
    With the Headstart grant Living Brain plans to further develop its solution and to make the lives of patients with neurological diseases better by testing and launching the product. It brides us with the breeding ground of collaboration in the vast network of EIT Health in Germany and Europe. Living Brain’s solution also matches with the EIT Health focus’ goals “Bringing care home” and “Creating the enabling environment for healthcare transformation”. By earlier experience in EIT Health hackathons and other events, we already had the chance to get a first feeling of how beneficial and helpful the collaboration is. Resulting from that in our development stage it was a logical consequence to apply for Headstart.
  • Future plans and ambitions: What’s next?
    In the next few months, Living Brain will make its product ready for entering the market in 2020. Therefore multiple studies with patients in different settings will be conducted to validate the functional principle of our approach. In the course of this process, the team will be enlarged so that the development process, scientific, technical and business-related, can be accelerated. That includes receiving necessary certificates, cooperations, software development and extensive testing, so that we can enter the market with a working product and a solid business case.

  • Product/service idea in 50 words or less
    The mobile software application ‘ilvi’ provides a multifunctional medical software-platform for clinical staff. ilvi hosts any mobile app and ensures that data from almost all medical devices flow seamlessly to the digital patient chart. Thus ilvi is offering a simple workflow-driven GUI for the user.
  • Origins of the idea.
    Patient charts in hospitals will become digital soon (or are already). However, most mobile medical devices cannot (or only very complicated) communicate directly with the HIS. ilvi’s origin is in the acquisition of vital- and health-data at the point-of-care to provide these data wirelessly to a digital patient chart in the hospital information system. In addition, ilvi is a platform for all (third party) medical apps to organize a simple and secure workflow for the user.
  • Key differentiated features of product/service.
    There are many mobile medical apps, more to come. All of them look for ‘themselves’ and are not designed to cooperate with others. For a hospital, this may mean, that in one ward several different mobile devices are required to manage the different use cases for a complete workflow. This is not only complicated to manage for the staff but also a nightmare for clinical IT services. In addition, we are not aware of any manufacturer-independent platform that allows to connect to many different medical devices to exchange data with the HIS. ilvi is a ‘software as a medical device’ according to MDD/MDR and we are ISO 13485 certificated.
  • Reasons for applying to Headstart.
    Having developed our solution to market readiness, we now started the process of market introduction. As decision cycles in hospitals are long, we seek support for pilot and reference installations as well as financial support.
  • Future plans and ambitions. What’s next?
    We want to enable hospitals to streamline their point of care workflows, freeing up resources for patients and have accurate and secure data in their systems. While continuously adding functionality we look to team up with app developers to enlarge the flawless package. As soon as we manage to have several references in the DACH region we plan to expand to Europe.

    Mentalab provides a better way to diagnose and monitor cardiac, pulmonary and neurological conditions, using patented wearable sensors together with mobile and cloud software. In doing so, Mentalab addresses the global problem of access to medical care by providing precise tools that can be used anywhere, at any time.
  • Origin if the idea, key differentiators, reasons to apply to Headstart.
    Our founder started Mentalab while working as a medical doctor specializing in cardiology and sleep medicine. Realizing the shortcomings of today’s technology, he decided to build a better mobile, wearable biosensing technology, to give patients access to at-home diagnostic and monitoring solutions that could hugely improve our care for cardiac and respiratory conditions. We have since bootstrapped Mentalab for 3 years, and built a working hardware & software prototype, currently in beta test. With the Headstart program, we would finalize our MVP, start testing in a clinical setting, and thereby confirm traction in order to increase the value of our company before raising a seed in early 2020 to accelerate our growth.

    Menutech is a SaaS for hospitals and senior homes to automate meal planning and personalize the meal offering to individual dietary requirements and pathologies using machine learning. Our vision is to eliminate malnutrition in hospitals and foster patient wellbeing by optimizing meal choices at a reduced food service cost.
  • Origins of the idea:
    The team is uniquely qualified in adapting our software for the healthcare market in close collaboration with medical advisors and experts, and enterprise customers that have signed letters of intent to purchase the adapted solution. Today, inpatient food service tasks cost up to 280 staff hours/month and site. The under- and malnutrition of elderly patients in hospitals (38.7%) and in rehabilitation (50.5%) incur longer hospital stay costs (up to 5829€ per patient). We aim to extend the software’s meal planning personalization to specific pre- and post-operative diets, pathologies and nutrition targets, thus improving patients’ health and wellbeing.
  • Key differentiated features of product/service.
    Menutech is uniquely positioned as a solution that optimizes food service operations in healthcare, leveraging the vast real-world meal data it is generating with its meal planning solution across Europe. Existing solutions perform well for general tasks, but face weaknesses in specific challenges such as nutrition pathways: our solution enables the highest level of meal personalization by adding predictive tools that leverage medical data using AI / Machine Learning, whilst reducing the burden on food service departments. The Menutech team is best to address the challenge, as it has extensive expertise in food service and a strong medical advisory board.
  • Reasons for applying to Headstart.
    The EIT Health Headstart Programme enables us to adjust our product to the healthcare market, connect with partners and experts in the field and collect data on patient-nurse uptake. This enables us to raise venture capital investment and scale our solution across Europe. The EIT Health ecosystem will benefit the speed of implementation, wider impact and visibility of the solution. Integrations with healthcare platforms allow us to embed meal plan optimisation and drive nutrition best-practices beyond hospital beds to consumers pre- and post-treatment.
  • Future plans and ambitions. What’s next?
    Following the analysis report of the pilot project, the solution will be scaled across Germany, Switzerland and France with a focus on early adopters from the private sector. Following a round of venture capital investment in 2020, marketing and sales activities will be expanded and are accompanied by appropriate hiring rounds. Further market expansion will target hospitals and senior homes in the geographies that are linguistically supported by our meal analysis algorithm: English, French, German, Italian and Spanish speaking markets in Europe and North America.
