Fraunhofer Annual Conference and Presentation of the Fraunhofer Research Awards in the Anniversary Year
In 2019 the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft celebrates its 70th anniversary. Founded to rebuild the local economy, with a clear focus on new key technologies and markets, it has become Europe’s largest organization for applied research and the innovation engine of the German economy.
At the beginning of May, around 700 guests from politics, business and society gathered in Munich to attend the annual conference in the anniversary year and award the Fraunhofer Research Prizes in order to focus on future technologies for Germany as an industrial location and to pay tribute to the outstanding achievements of outstanding scientists. Speakers at the event included German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel, Lord Mayor of the Bavarian capital Munich Dieter Reiter and Prof. Reimund Neugebauer, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
Dieter Reiter, Lord Mayor of the Bavarian state capital Munich, said: “Munich is the birthplace and home town of this largest organisation for application-oriented research in Europe. With its new headquarters on Hansastraße, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has created a permanent home for itself here and, with its institutes and facilities, cutting-edge research and top-class events, is strengthening Munich’s international position as a location for science, research and innovation. I am therefore very pleased that the Fraunhofer Annual Conference, with the presentation of the Joseph von Fraunhofer Prizes and the Fraunhofer Technology for People Award, will take place in Munich in 2019, the anniversary year, and that the close ties between society and our city will also be confirmed in this way.
“For 70 years, Fraunhofer has been a central pillar of the German science system, which is highly respected worldwide. Fraunhofer developments are the fuel of the economy,” explained Prof. Reimund Neugebauer, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. “We see ourselves as a clock generator and technology engine at the same time. Our employees are entrepreneurs and visionaries – and form the basis of our success. Fraunhofer researchers not only ask the right questions, they also find sustainable and value-adding answers. I am particularly pleased that, in the year of our 70th anniversary, we have been able to award four Joseph von Fraunhofer Prizes in addition to the Fraunhofer Technology for Human Beings Prize due to the high quality of the submissions”.

This year again, the ceremonial awarding of the research prizes was the central highlight of the event. For research and development achievements that make a significant contribution to improving people’s quality of life and maintaining their performance in daily life and into old age, the award, which was presented in the form of an award for the best research and development achievements, was presented.
50,000 was awarded the “Technology for People” prize. In addition, four “Joseph von Fraunhofer Prizes” were awarded this year. Since 1978, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has been awarding the prizes, also endowed with 50,000 euros, to employees for outstanding scientific achievements with system relevance and the direct potential to make a decisive contribution to solving challenges facing society as a whole and to securing the future of Germany as a business location.
