New Medical Campus in Frankonia
The FAU, the Klinikum Bayreuth GmbH, the University Hospital Erlangen and the University of Bayreuth welcome the establishment of the Medical Campus Franconia, which was now approved by the Bavarian Cabinet. In the future, the Medical Campus will enable young people to receive training as a doctor and thus further increase the number of medical university places in Bavaria.
Since the summer of 2017 the project partners had developed together a comprehensive concept to achieve an ambitious goal: in the future, 100 medical students will be trained each year in the clinical study section at this Medical Campus . In order to maintain the ties of prospective students from the region, the new FAU study course “Human Medicine Erlangen-Nuremberg / Bayreuth” begins with the first study section in Erlangen already in the winter semester 2019/20. The training in the second stage of study then takes place from 2021 on the Medical Campus in Bayreuth.
One of the major goals of the Bavarian State Government with the Medical Campus Franconia is to improve healthcare outside the metropolitan areas. Young doctors should have the opportunity to stay in the region where they have completed their education. The fact that the preclinical training takes place at the Faculty of Medicine of the FAU, reviewers see as another major advantage of the cooperation concept. The well-established medical education at the FAU ensures that the quality of the study will be constantly high. However, it will take approximately ten years to have a noticeable effect on medical care in Franconia.
“With the Medical Campus Upper Franconia, we are helping to further improve medical education and care in Bavaria. The FAU as traditional university with research and teaching at the highest level, offers proven competence in neighboring disciplines such as medical technology. In addition, our General Medical Institute offers the best prerequisites for inspiring young students to become a country doctor and thus securing local medical care, “explains Prof. Dr. med. Joachim Hornegger, President of the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg.
The University of Bayreuth stands for the fact that the Medical Campus Franconia will trigger an innovation boost. This is where profile-forming professorships in the areas of Public Health, Digital Health, Big Data and Molecular Biosystems will be created, which at the same time address the existing research priorities of the Universities of Bayreuth and Erlangen-Nuremberg. The Medical Campus Franconia is a great and important progress for our entire region; the medical quality will continue to increase. And: With up to 400 additional students and more than 150 new jobs, the Medical Campus is one of the most important development centers of the coming years in Germany.
