Connecting start-ups and business experts for innovative healthcare solutions
Matchmaking and Pitch Training Workshop on 18 January 2017 in Mannheim
On 18 January 2017, EIT Health Germany invited start-ups, businesses and industry experts to a “Start-up Pitch and Matchmaking Workshop” in Mannheim, hosted by Roche Diagnostics GmbH. Around 50 participants had the opportunity during the day to listen to business presentations and to network. Partners from EIT Health Germany included for example Beiersdorf AG, Heidelberg University, Roche Diagnostics GmbH and SAP SE. Other organisations were for example Heidelberg Startup Partners, Merck Ventures, Evonik, High-Tech Gründerfonds Management GmbH, Wettbewerbszentrale and other relevant stakeholders.
During the day, 17 start-ups in the field of biotech, medtech and digital health presented their business ideas and received valuable feedback for the further improvement of their business strategy. One example in the field of digital health from Germany included Don’tBePatient GmbH, a portal allowing for bi-directional communication between industry, payers, providers and patients. Another example in the area of biotech from Hungary was MDQuest Kft, who develop, validate and commercialize biomarker-based diagnostic tests for hematology and autoimmune disease patients. In order to create an environment where innovations can flourish, EIT Health Germany intends to create a platform for start-ups and business experts to share ideas, to explore collaboration and to discuss new business opportunities.

Further business ideas were centred on oncology, biomarker-based diagnostic tests, chronic diseases, behavioural changes for healthier lives, patient communication, augmented reality to enhance communication and training for surgeons during minimal invasive surgery and empowered personalized healthcare management to enhance quality of life.
During interactive Matchmaking Sessions, the start-ups had the opportunity to discuss their ideas and needs with industry experts in order to further explore how to enhance their business models. “In order to enable real innovations and bring them quicker to the market, you need to have the right contacts at the right time and EIT Health intends to support this process by connecting the right people and start-ups in the healthcare scene”, claimed Dr. Armin Pscherer, CEO of the German EIT Health GmbH.
A highlight of the day was the speech of Dr. Gabriele Pestlin, Head of Strategic Planning and Deployment of Roche Diagnostics GmbH. She emphasized the need for collaboration in the pharma industry in light of the variety of customers and global challenges. The focus of personalized healthcare combined with a strong corporate culture are key assets of Roche Diagnostics GmbH.
Altogether, EIT Health Germany was quite pleased with the outcomes of the event, as there was a high participation rate in an interactive format which could lead to new innovative healthcare solutions in the near future.
