Around 350 participants from 19 countries joined the EIT Health Summit on 23 and 24 November 2016 in Barcelona. During the 2 days, participants had plenty of networking opportunities and learned more about EIT Health activities and involvement opportunities.

A highlight of the event was the Business Plan Aggregator Competition. 21 start-ups in the categories MedTech, BioTech and Digital Health pitched their business ideas in front of a large audience and a jury consisting of European investors. These start-ups had been pre-selected via a best of the best process at national level and each EIT Health Co-Location Center had the chance to nominate 3 national winners in the 3 categories. The start-ups of CLC Germany included Coldplasmatech (MedTech), iSurgeon (Digital Health) and MammaScreen (BioTech).

The German Co-Location Center (CLC) was very delighted with the performance of their selected start-ups during the EIT Health Summit. MammaScreen received the first award in the category BioTech, Coldplasmatech was the first winner in the category MedTech and iSurgeon received the 2nd place in the category Digital Health. Furthermore, Coldplasmatech and MammaScreen won the 1st and 2nd place in the Audience Award.

“The German start-ups achieved impressive results in the pan-European competition”

Coldplasmatech developed a new solution in wound therapy with cold plasma that eliminates multiresistant bacteria and supports healing processes in the case of chronic and infected wounds. iSurgeon provides a unique and new form of visual communication for surgeons to communicate faster, easier and more reliably using augmented reality. MammaScreen has developed a highly accurate biomarker-based lab test for early detection of breast cancer. All 3 start-ups had been pre-selected by the German CLC during the SHIP (Ship for Health Innovation Pitches) Event in Heidelberg on 9 August 2016 and based on their previous performance, as all of them had already received other health-related awards (eg. Life Science Meets IT Hackathon, Science4Life, etc.).

“The German start-ups achieved impressive results in the pan-European competition and we are very proud of their performance and wish them all the best for their future which we will actively accompany,” emphasized Dr. Armin Pscherer, CEO of the German EIT Health GmbH. Altogether, these results show that start-ups are a key source for fast and smart innovative healthcare solutions and can help to improve the European healthcare landscape.

Other interactive sessions built an interesting networking environment during the EIT Health Summit. Under the topic “the future of healthcare in Europe”, panelists like e.g. Robert Madelin, Fipra Chief Strategist and former EC Director General of DG CONNECT and earlier of DG SANTE and Peter Wintlev-Jensen, Senior Policy Officer of DG CONNECT of the European Commission discussed challenges and priorities in European healthcare that require collaborative approaches.

The EIT Health Summit offered a large variety of new knowledge and ideas for innovative healthcare solutions

Poster exhibitions about the EIT Health Innovation Projects showed the breadth of innovative potential of this European partnership community. Different programmes for entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs, but also EIT Health Campus opportunities and information about Digital Programmes and Graduate Education were provided. Thus, the EIT Health Summit offered a large variety of new knowledge and ideas for innovative healthcare solutions.
